Technical SEO is the work that helps search engines find, read and trust your website. It is not about the words on a page. It is about how the site is built and delivered, so that the good content you have can actually be discovered and shown to people searching for it.
Why does technical SEO matter?
You can write excellent pages and still get no search traffic if search engines cannot reach them, cannot understand them or find the site slow and unreliable. Technical SEO removes those obstacles. Think of it as the foundation: it does not win customers by itself, but nothing else works well without it.
What does technical SEO include?
These are the main areas a technical review looks at:
- Crawling and indexing: can search engines reach your pages, and are the right ones being added to search results?
- Site speed: do pages load quickly, including on a phone?
- Mobile friendliness: does the site work well on small screens?
- Security: is the site served over HTTPS?
- Structure and addresses: are pages organised logically, with clean, readable web addresses?
- Sitemaps and robots files: do you tell search engines what to look at and what to skip?
- Structured data: does the site describe its content in a way machines can read?
- Errors and redirects: are there broken pages, redirect chains or duplicate versions of the same page?
What is crawling and indexing?
Search engines send programs called crawlers to follow links from page to page. Crawling is that discovery. Indexing is when a page is stored and made eligible to appear in results. A page that is blocked, hidden behind a broken link or marked "do not index" by mistake will not show up, however good it is.
Why do speed and mobile matter?
Most people will visit on a phone, and they leave when pages are slow. Search engines notice this too, because they want to send people to sites that work well. Fast loading, stable layouts and readable text on small screens help both visitors and rankings.
What is structured data?
Structured data is extra information added to a page in a standard format, so search engines know what it is about: a business, a service, an article, a set of questions and answers. It can help your pages appear with richer results, and it makes your content easier for search and AI tools to understand.
How can you tell if your site has technical problems?
Some common signs:
- Pages that you expect to find in Google do not appear.
- The site feels slow, especially on mobile.
- You see error pages, or links that go nowhere.
- Google Search Console reports issues with indexing or page experience.
- Traffic dropped after a redesign or a move to a new platform.
Google Search Console is free and is the best first place to look. It shows which pages are indexed and flags many technical problems.
Technical, on-page and off-page SEO
These three work together:
- Technical SEO makes the site easy for search engines to use.
- On-page SEO makes each page clear and relevant, through titles, headings, copy and internal links.
- Off-page SEO builds trust through links and mentions from other reputable sites.
Skipping any of them leaves a gap. Start with the foundation, then build on it.
Where should you start?
Check that your site works well on a phone, that it loads over HTTPS, that your key pages are indexed, and that you have a sitemap. Then fix what Search Console flags. Larger issues, such as structure, redirects or structured data, are worth handing to someone who does this regularly.

Frequently asked questions
What is technical SEO in simple terms?
Technical SEO is the work that helps search engines find, read and understand your website. It covers things like site speed, mobile friendliness, security, site structure, sitemaps and structured data.
How is technical SEO different from on-page SEO?
On-page SEO is about what is on each page: titles, headings, copy and links. Technical SEO is about how the whole site is built and delivered, so search engines can reach and trust those pages in the first place.
Can I do technical SEO myself?
You can check the basics yourself, such as mobile friendliness, page speed and whether your pages appear in Google. Deeper fixes, such as site structure, redirects and structured data, usually need a developer or an SEO specialist.
